I’d like to take a moment to explain how I met Patrick and other things. 1) I joined MySpace about a year ago, and shortly was horrified. After that initial emotional response, I discovered that it was a fantastic way to find new music, so I devoted my account there to expanding my music base. At some point, I started adding info about my Cut Paper and discovered Patrick, who ended up on my friends list.

Fast forward to my show last fall, I browse my messages and see that Patrick is having a show in San Francisco simultaneously. I was excited, as I truly admire his work and hoped to meet him. I shot out an email and he told me that the trip from Tokyo to San Franciso wasn’t going to happen. But, I did shoot photos of his work hanging at the show. And what a show… (Between you and me, Patrick’s work was on top in a show strictly about things involving paper!)

Now about his work: Unique style, combination of cutting and tearing paper, well-defined characters and subjects, and a wonderful sense of humor. Color, composition and flow are all a delight to my eyes. Do yourself a favor, check out Patrick Gannon’s Cut Paper Art, and if you are so inclined, pick up a piece. I saw them in person and they are extraordinary. Patrick, you also make my day. Keep on making the world as you see it.

I joined Ellia’s group in Flickr about Cut Paper Illustration, and she welcomed me with open arms. After a while, she invted me to be a moderator for the group, and we discovered that we were both “Hills”, but no relation, both have an affinity for Halo, and paper. Her work is strong, happy, fun and always makes me smile. Blog tagline: “cut paper goodness and the writings in between [including motherhood]”

We all know the drill. Grow. Grow harder. Grow up. Rest up for a bit. Grow some more. Somewhere along the line the concept of age got tied to this whole process. They are not exclusive partners.

Tunes note: I had every intention of beginning one of my new ideas and posting some original music for your listening pleasure while looking. It’s a bit late right now, so instead I will share this with you: I was listening to Department of Eagles while cutting tonight and it was sublime. If you’ve ever heard of the incredible Brooklyn band called Grizzly Bear, you already know one of the musical geniuses behind Department of Eagles - Daniel Rossen. Albums I listened to tonight: The Whitey on the Moon EP, Gold Suits (Please treat yourself to watching this video of “No One Does it Like You”), Johnny Glaze Christmas (Classical Snatches and Samples a go-go), and from Grizzly Bear - Horn of Plenty (the remixes).

And you may hear more about Grizzly Bear… I just discovered they are touring with Radiohead later this year. AND, I just discovered a sold-out show with Paul Simon and Gillian Welch at BAM in 2 weeks. Sigh…

While I was enjoying the deep-fried polenta with creamy gorgonzola sauce from Cafe Citti (Kenwood, CA), my new friend Star was buzzing around taking photos of the birds in Healdsburg. I was just doing my thing, cutting, and she kept bringing back her camera, showing me all the cool birds within blocks of the Tasting Lounge. Thanks for all the birds, Star. At the time, I did not know I was tapping into The Fountainhead, thought I was just feeling the moment, making a strong face. But now that I’m about 40 pages from finishing the book again, I realize it can be no one else.

I’ll admit I was heavily influenced by my surroundings while creating this piece. My good friends behind the bar in the Tasting Lounge @ Thumbprint Cellars very skillfully kept my wineglass up-to-date on what was the toast of the moment. I was inspired :)

During the weekend I made tons of new sketches and (count ‘em) eight (8!) new pieces. I’ll post them next week after I get home from Cali.

Opening was great! Lots of fun people showed up, and the second piece was sold.

Yesterday, I sat out front making art in a live studio:

I met hundreds of great people! Thank you all for your wonderful comments, insights and encouragement. Interest is high and it looks like many people are coming back today to pick up those pieces that caught their eye. Come early if you want to get your piece!

I also made five new pieces during the live studio. It’s wonderful to have the time to site for an entire day and make art while talking to cool people.

I must add that Scott’s wines are the perfect compliment to happiness :) It’s like music in your mouth. The Tasting Room is very hyggeligt (Danish - look it up), and the whole atmosphere here in Healdsburg is fun and warm. I am having a wonderful time. More updates to come!

So I’m in San Francisco last night, and my friend says we’re invited to a Halloween party. What to do? Create a mythic legend! In just an hour, Sujamo the Destroyer was born!

Sky cow is wicked bad. A genie wearing leather. Tricksy sort. Sea Pig, and his sidekick AfroFin, are jus’ kickin’ it, shouting manta rays. You know, the usual. Wonder what’s going to happen next?

The framing is selected, and work is in progress to prepare my art for it’s first public showing! The photograph does not really do it justice! So, you’ll just have to come see it for yourself :)

One thing of note that I failed to mention earlier is that some of the proceeds from the sale of my work will be donated by Scott and Erica from Thumbprint Cellars to a local charity - The Art Bus (a.k.a the Imagine Bus Project North).

Also of note is that I am bringing all originals to this show. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see what my work looks like in it’s primary form, not after a scan (as it is on this site).
