 Here are a few shots from last night’s opening, which was truly wonderful:

I didn't realize I look a little like Daniel Rossen now... weird.

I was busy being happy and enjoying all of my friends that came out to support the show. So, unfortunately, I didn’t get photos of all of you :( Deep, grateful thanks to each and every one of you.

So earlier this week I had an idea about hanging the show – both a theme and a method. No framing, naked paper. But how to do it without damaging the pieces? Lomo to the rescue. Yes, Lomo.

They sell these amazing little plastic Fotoclips and they also opened a store in downtown Manhattan! Perfect. So, I dropped by on my way to a party in Brooklyn and… voila! Here are the results:

A massive show with 33 pieces on exhibit.

The show theme is Naked Paper, and I’ve even hung pieces that normally would get a black backing open over the wall. The interesting things are that they a) have a yellow wall – so how it shows against this will change throughout the day organically and b) they stand off the wall a little bit so some shadowcasting happens.

I’m excited to see how this experiment works out. There was lots of interest from coffee lovers while I spent two hours hanging the show.

I’d like to take a moment to explain how I met Patrick and other things. 1) I joined MySpace about a year ago, and shortly was horrified. After that initial emotional response, I discovered that it was a fantastic way to find new music, so I devoted my account there to expanding my music base. At some point, I started adding info about my Cut Paper and discovered Patrick, who ended up on my friends list.

Fast forward to my show last fall, I browse my messages and see that Patrick is having a show in San Francisco simultaneously. I was excited, as I truly admire his work and hoped to meet him. I shot out an email and he told me that the trip from Tokyo to San Franciso wasn’t going to happen. But, I did shoot photos of his work hanging at the show. And what a show… (Between you and me, Patrick’s work was on top in a show strictly about things involving paper!)

Now about his work: Unique style, combination of cutting and tearing paper, well-defined characters and subjects, and a wonderful sense of humor. Color, composition and flow are all a delight to my eyes. Do yourself a favor, check out Patrick Gannon’s Cut Paper Art, and if you are so inclined, pick up a piece. I saw them in person and they are extraordinary. Patrick, you also make my day. Keep on making the world as you see it.

Ellia Hill – a.k.a. GreenBeanBaby – Cut Paper Illustrator and Artist
I joined Ellia’s group in Flickr about Cut Paper Illustration, and she welcomed me with open arms. After a while, she invted me to be a moderator for the group, and we discovered that we were both “Hills”, but no relation, both have an affinity for Halo, and paper. Her work is strong, happy, fun and always makes me smile. Blog tagline: “cut paper goodness and the writings in between [including motherhood]“

Gabe is one of the very few photographers I know that still has his own silver darkroom, and shoots film with a passion. His fine art photography of entropic creations of man and nature are reminiscent of other times and places.

During the weekend I made tons of new sketches and (count ‘em) eight (8!) new pieces. I’ll post them next week after I get home from Cali.

Opening was great! Lots of fun people showed up, and the second piece was sold.

Yesterday, I sat out front making art in a live studio:

I met hundreds of great people! Thank you all for your wonderful comments, insights and encouragement. Interest is high and it looks like many people are coming back today to pick up those pieces that caught their eye. Come early if you want to get your piece!

I also made five new pieces during the live studio. It’s wonderful to have the time to site for an entire day and make art while talking to cool people.

I must add that Scott’s wines are the perfect compliment to happiness :) It’s like music in your mouth. The Tasting Room is very hyggeligt (Danish – look it up), and the whole atmosphere here in Healdsburg is fun and warm. I am having a wonderful time. More updates to come!

The framing is selected, and work is in progress to prepare my art for it’s first public showing! The photograph does not really do it justice! So, you’ll just have to come see it for yourself :)

One thing of note that I failed to mention earlier is that some of the proceeds from the sale of my work will be donated by Scott and Erica from Thumbprint Cellars to a local charity – The Art Bus (a.k.a the Imagine Bus Project North).

Also of note is that I am bringing all originals to this show. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see what my work looks like in it’s primary form, not after a scan (as it is on this site).

My new friends, Scott and Erica Lindstrom-Dake, make fine wines, and call their outstanding family of wines Thumbprint Cellars. There is space in their beautiful tasting room for art (see above), and excitedly invited me to show my work to the public for six weeks starting in early November. Note: They also sell wines on their site! I highly recommend their Pinot Noir.

I will be heading out to hang the show so it’s ready for the opening on Nov 2nd and also the grand “Wine and Food Affair”, which is sure to be 2 days of tasty deliciousness. In addition, I will be doing some live art Saturday and Sunday so that visitors can watch me at work.
